Core Competencies & the National Training Initiative
Safe States Alliance has partnered with the Society for the Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR) to create a joint initiative known as the National Training Initiative (NTI). Through NTI, both organizations have worked together to develop Core Competencies for professionals working in the field of injury and violence prevention.
The Core Competencies encompass essential knowledge and skills that are widely considered necessary to work in the field of injury and violence prevention. In addition to the Core Competencies, the Safe States Alliance and SAVIR have also identified ways in which professionals can learn the skills and knowledge identified by the Core Competencies. NTI has also developed a self-assessment tool for professionals and organizations to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in each of the Core Competency areas.

The NTI Core Competencies Self-Assessment Tool can assist individuals and organizations in understanding their areas of strength and weakness regarding the fundamental and basic principles of injury and violence prevention from a public health perspective.
In the short-term, the self-assessment tool can direct individuals to the areas in which further training would strengthen their professional competence. For organizations or agencies, it can help provide a current picture of staff strengths and weaknesses and assist in planning to fill gaps through modified job descriptions and training. In the long term, the self-assessment tool can form the basis for a broader effort to enhance professional development in injury and violence prevention among individuals and organizations.
